Despite first perceptions, the biggest cost of traveling the world isn’t flights; it’s your accommodation. Even the price of cheap hostels is enough to deter a budget minded explorer.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! Through my years of traveling, I’ve learned and acquired some tricks to keeping my costs down. I want to share a few of them, below.
Stay in the Town
Waking up with a view of the water or the forest is a great feeling. But, do you know the difference between a hotel on the beach on in the forest and one which is in the local town and is a 5-minute bus ride away from tourist attractions? Hundreds of dollars a night! That’s the difference!

I quickly learned that staying in the hippest areas of any place that I wanted to visit was just too expensive. Instead, I stay where I like to call ‘hip-adjacent.’ It’s a fraction of the cost, and you will see much more culture.
Discounts
Remember the Groupon Coupons page for Straight Talk? Well, lingerie isn’t the only thing you can get a discount for. Hotels, hostels, and resorts all offer discounts; you just need to know where to look.
Check out accommodation aggregation sites which offer ‘secret/locked’ hotel deals. The idea behind these is you don’t know which hotel you’ll be staying, just the area. What you do know, however, is its star rating. I have stayed in 5-star suites for less than I paid for a hostel bunk, thanks for these deals!
Couch Surfing
Is it glamorous? No. Is it cheap? Absolutely, yes! Couch surfing is becoming more and more popular, with numerous sites offering the service to connect you with a sofa while you travel.
Couch surfing is more than accommodation, however. The people that usually offer their couches are local and social people, always happy to exchange stories and knowledge about cultures.
Don’t let the perception of expensive accomodation put you off traveling the world and having adventures. Keep these tips in mind the next time you get the travel itch and enjoy!
