According to yesterday’s survey, fifty-nine per cent of Americans (or an estimated 137.4 millions people) are considering or planning to shop during Thanksgiving weekend. This was according to Prosper Insights & Analytics. These numbers include in-store as well as online shopping. These numbers are higher than last‘s 58.7%, or 135.8million people. Black Friday will continue to be the busiest holiday weekend day with 74% planning on shopping that day. This is the same percentage as 2015.

Total Retail Take Despite warnings that the recent Presidential election might suppress consumer confidence, and thus spending, the NRF report seems to support that. Retailers are happy to hear that more Americans will shop Thanksgiving weekend than they did last year. The survey results also revealed that 21 percent of respondents planned to shop Thanksgiving Day, which is only 3 percent more than the number who planned to shop Sunday. This seems like a large percentage of Thanksgiving shoppers, but I suspect that this tends to favor online shopping. Perhaps it’s the morning or afternoon after the big meal when people lounge on their couches.

Casper plans to open physical stores

According to help needed ads on its website, online mattress brand Casper plans to open a fleet physical stores. According to its ads, the two-year-old company plans to sell its foam mattresses, which come in tightly packed boxes and inflate themselves when opened, in other stores and even to get some hotels to purchase its products. It was not possible to determine a timeframe for the rollout of retail stores.

Total Retail Take: Casper follows what has become a popular route for digital-first entrepreneurs — to go online before opening brick-and-mortar shops. Others like Warby Parker and Birchbox, as well as Amazon.com, have successfully made the shift from e-commerce into physical retail. It is a huge advantage to have multiple touchpoints with customers in today’s connected world (thanks to smartphones), especially for brands that sell mattresses or a product that can be touched before it is purchased. Casper isn’t blindly entering the physical retail industry. The startup tested its brick-and mortar strategy in six pop-up shops in Los Angeles and London, as well as New York City.
